CONTINUE returns a specified cell from an array formula result.

Sample Usage

CONTINUE(A2,2,1)

Syntax

CONTINUE(source_cell, row, column)

  • source_cell - The cell containing the array formula for which the cell containing CONTINUE represents a part of the result.

  • row - The row relative to the result of the formula in source_cell that this CONTINUE call represents.

  • column - The column relative to the result of the formula in source_cell that this CONTINUE call represents.

Notes

  • Typically, the CONTINUE function is added automatically when an array formula is used. CONTINUE can be used manually in cases where an array formula is wrapped in NOEXPAND.

  • Using CONTINUE manually with absolute cell references allows the values returned by CONTINUE to be sorted with Google Sheets sort functionality.

See Also

NOEXPAND: Prevents the automatic expansion of array formula output as the output size grows.

EXPAND: Forces the automatic expansion of array formula output as the output size grows.

ARRAYFORMULA: Enables the display of values returned from an array formula into multiple rows and/or columns and the use of non-array functions with arrays.

Examples

Example data.

Displays only two rows of data, using FILTER

Then displays five rows of data by changing the Displaying Rows from 2 to 5. The result shows the difference between using NOEXPAND and without using NOEXPAND.

Displays the usage of CONTINUE when NOEXPAND applies to the result of FILTER.

CONTINUE can be used to reference the specific cell and return the value.
